Grizzly/Rom Bin – Underground Ore Pass

This capital project showcased our expertise and capability and saw Orontide nominated as a finalist in the Innovative Mining Solutions category of the Australian Mining Prospect Awards.

Orontide was awarded the contract for the 465 Grizzly Project to supply and install a new underground orepass system for underground mining operations.

The brief included the design, engineering, manufacture and installation of infrastructure to extend asset life with a strong focus on minimising the shutdown period whilst demonstrating the highest commitment to safety. Several major challenges were identified that required solutions and controls during the design and installation planning phase.

Our unique design and development of a solution that incorporated a purpose-built set of modular work platforms with the ability to “evolve” during the course of the two week installation was the major contributor to the success of this project.  Our solution to overcome challenges resulted in an innovative, lower priced, new modular method for installation of a new system, with safety and efficiency established as key metrics for the task.  Not only did it achieve excellent safety results with no injuries recorded during the installation, but it also halved the time required to shut down that section of the underground mine.  This resulted in significant operational benefits to our Client and reduced the exposure of their workers to hazards.

Consistent quality and a strong focus on delivery expectations were essential to the success of this project and were not compromised even during the final stages where 120 tonnes of steel were installed a kilometre underground in just 14 days.
